How to integrate with mObywatel

Is mObywatel worth your while?

Yes. It’s familiar to Polish users, so ID verification completion is usually higher and errors are lower than with manual form fill or document uploads. The user can clearly see who is requesting the data and can approve or deny sharing it. 

Once approved, data is securely sent to the requesting party. 

Since September 1, 2023, the digital mDowód in mObywatel has the same legal standing as the physical ID card — regulated businesses are obliged to accept it. If you’re in a regulated company, you should strongly consider integration.

What mObywatel is (in practice)

For users, it’s a wallet with digital documents like mDowód (eID) and a driving licence.

For businesses, it’s a consent-based way to receive verified personal data. You request a fixed data bundle defined by the Ministry of Digital Affairs. For example, “set 0” allows you to request given names, surname & PESEL (PESEL is the Polish national ID number). 

Data bundles are predefined by the Ministry. You don’t pick fields ad hoc. The application process primarily focuses on explaining the legal basis for obtaining a specific set of data points from the user.

User perspective

This isn’t a selfie flow. On a desktop, the user scans a QR code with the mObywatel app. 

On mobile, they tap to open mObywatel and continue in the app. One screen shows who is requesting and exactly which details will be shared. 

The user taps “Share data”, and the flow moves on. 

Some companies opt to add a quick face match after the consent process is finished. When a trusted reference user's photograph is sent by mObywatel, it can be compared to a live selfie. It’s an additional check that is useful for highly regulated companies like banks or for very high-risk onboarding scenarios.

How to get access to mObywatel if you are a KYC/AML-regulated business?

First of all, you need to have your business registered in Poland. The application process happens on the government website, and without registration it can not be started.

After you get approved, you need to go through the integration and testing phases. Once certified, you can be promoted to production. 

The process typically involves:

• requesting predefined data bundles,
• testing in a sandbox,
• moving to production after the certification process.
